"A man was apparently caught on CCTV, kicking, tossing and hitting kittens with an umbrella in an alleyway in Malaysia. The mother cat in the video tries to save her kittens from the abuse but to no avail.

The abuse apparently took place in Serdang, which is located in the Malaysian state of Selangor."

In 1998, the British medical journal Lancet published a study linking autism to childhood vaccines authored by Andrew Wakefield and others. Last February, Lancet retracted the article amid concerns of its accuracy. In May, Wakefield was stripped of his British medical license and now another journal has wrapped up an investigation that concludes that Wakefield cooked the data for all 12 of the patients discussed in his hugely influential article.

There was a time when I could not listen to Imus in the Morning* without hearing Don, or his deranged wife Deirdre, rant about the dangers of vaccinations, specifically about Thimerosal.

As mentioned in this story, Mrs. Imus has a simpleton approach to her investigation: Follow the Money. As PalMD points out, "following the money" is not the greatest scientific method ever created. For one thing, those of us who are involved in science and business know that money follows success. In the case of government money, success is measured quite differently than in the private sector. However, the issue here is the notion that vaccine manufacturers would knowingly put poison into their products to extend the shelf life, and cause autism in children so they can make a few extra bucks. If that were their objective, I think there are cheaper and easier ways to do it.

Following the money does come in handy when examining why someone would publish a phony report, like Andrew Wakefield did (see the Reason article for details). His motivation was to create a report for lawyers to use as ammunition to sue vaccine manufacturers. He profited from fraud, the lawyers profited from fraud and so did the Imus family.

This fraud has persuaded an unknown number of parents to expose their children to childhood diseases that are easily preventable with safe and plentiful modern vaccines.

This won't hurt a bit.

*The first time I heard that show was through the radio of a friend's father during rides to school. We teased our friend that her father liked to torture children. Years later, I had to wake to Imus, aka the Crypt Keeper while living with a much older lover and that was when I heard the nonsense about vaccine preservatives causing autism.

I have attempted to listen to it since, but just can't get into it. Beloved likes the Bernard character on the show and that is fine, as long as I cannot hear it.

More Suki Future Tech Coming True Today

Yes, I haven't posted here in a while but this is the more appropriate blog for this item.
Jesse Walker at reason covers the new wave in electronic payment transaction handling.

Seems that credit and debit card processing is wide open now and retailer costs are set to drop like a homesick brick.

In the Suki series, the backdrop at least, a key element to the 2030's is low friction transactions between buyers and sellers around the world. Like several other things, this is not the silver bullet that solves the problems of the world, just a major contributor.

I did imagine that easier communications and secure/cheep/free-ish transactions would result in more recreational travel and less labor migration. Most folks, just from my observations, wish they could make a great living where they grew up and travel to the more cosmopolitan places at their leisure.

An element in the Suki series is secure communications, secure transactions, things like that. One important element is having true random number generation. Slashdot uncovered a new random number generation system that looks like it should be compact enough to use anywhere you have a computer, like in your gogs.

More Slashdot, Junctionless transistors could simplify chip making. It does require tiny dimensions and more research in that area should make all of the working bits of devices smaller, faster and less power-hungry. Like, again, for your gogs or if your way cool boyfriend likes to gadget up the muscle cars he builds and sells to rich people :)

Not exactly Suki-tech, but from the Slashdot front page, 1 TB Solid State Drive that fits on a postage stamp from Toshiba.

In the Suki fiction book series a 1TB "sliver" is described. They are used in gogs (another here) and other devices in the 2030's. It was also a plot device for John's ex distributing an extreme kinky (today's standards), pornographic video of Suki to John.

It is a tiny format, much smaller than a postage stamp, memory "stick" that is typically attached to a larger package, not unlike the way flash memory cards are sold now, but the sliver is much smaller. The agency said in a statement the test took place at 8:44 p.m. PST (11:44 p.m. EST) on Thursday /0444 GMT on Friday) at Point Mugu's Naval Air Warfare Center-Weapons Division Sea Range off Ventura in central California.

"The Missile Defense Agency demonstrated the potential use of directed energy to defend against ballistic missiles when the Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB) successfully destroyed a boosting ballistic missile" the agency said.

The high-powered Airborne Laser system is being developed by Boeing Co., the prime contractor, and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.

Boeing produces the airframe, a modified 747 jumbo jet, while Northrop Grumman supplies the higher-energy laser and Lockheed Martin is developing the beam and fire control systems.

Google Feb. 11 said it will build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in some locations across the U.S., hurtling Internet data at speeds of 1 gigabit per second, or more than 100 times faster than most residential broadband connections.

Google will offer this service to anywhere from 50,000 people to 500,000 people. Why would a search engine do this?

Apple iPad Built For Maximum Profit, Theorizes iSuppli

Oh, how terrible. Profit? Who would hear of it in pleasant company!

Apple's iPad tablet PC underwent a virtual teardown by research firm iSuppli, which surmises that the device will offer a sizable profit for the tech company. The mid-range iPad could cost around $287.15 to build, but will retail for $729. A Credit Suisse analyst suggested in an earlier research note that Apple may be "nimble" on pricing for the iPad if consumers don’t immediately adopt the device in large numbers upon its release in two months. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was recently seen meeting with executives from The New York Times to demonstrate the iPad's abilities and media-display potential.

Ancient Greenland Gene Map Has a Surprise

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists have sequenced the DNA from four frozen hairs of a Greenlander who died 4,000 years ago in a study they say takes genetic technology into several new realms.

Surprisingly, the long-dead man appears to have originated in Siberia and is unrelated to modern Greenlanders, Morten Rasmussen of the University of Copenhagen and colleagues found.

"This provides evidence for a migration from Siberia into the New World some 5,500 years ago, independent of that giving rise to the modern Native Americans and Inuit," the researchers wrote in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Google's new thingie coming under geek criticism:

CNET identifies a central obstacle Buzz will have to overcome to gain traction: "The problem, however, will be the increasing backlash Google is seeing from the general public over how much data the company already controls on their online habits."

Sorry, there is no freaking way that is a general public backlash. It is a geek, but in the know geek, objection. Most don't give a care or they are unaware.

EduBook sounds neat.

I'm typing this on a netbook with no hard drive, not using a chip from Intel or AMD, and powered by AA batteries. Eight rechargeable AAs, to be precise, in a bank of cells right where a Li-Ion battery would sit in a conventional laptop. The batteries charge in place, too (regulation prevents overcharging) meaning that the power cord is a simple three-prong-to-cloverleaf cord, no wall-wart required. It's the EduBookfrom Xcore (see that page for some photos of the internals, too), and it's a cool concept. Despite some warts, it's one of the most interesting things I ran into on the CES show floor last month (Xcore's Michael Barnes kindly supplied the laptop, straight from the display case). "Scientists working on the Cassini space mission have found negatively charged water ions in the ice plume of Enceladus. Their findings, based on analysis from data taken in plume fly-throughs in 2008 and reported in the journal Icarus, provide evidence for the presence of liquid water, which suggests the ingredients for life inside the icy moon. The Cassini plasma spectrometer, used to gather this data, also found other species of negatively charged ions including hydrocarbons."

Kindle taking on iPad

Amazon has acquired Touchco, a start-up company developed by NYU's Media Research Lab that specializes in touch screen technology, hinting that a touch-screen Kindle e-reader may be in the works. Neither side has disclosed the terms of the deal.

Touchco uses a technology known as "Force Sensitive Resistance" that has been in place since 1979, said Ken Perlin, NYU professor of computer science and co-founder of Touchco.

The technology allows "variations in pressure on a thin-sheet material to be converted into varying electrical conductance," Perlin said. The Touchco team developed a method, known as Interpolating Force Sensitive Resistance, that can distinguish between the different pressures recorded.

Suki is an attractive, single young professional Libertarian, performing advanced technology research and looking for a bright, nice, acceptable boyfriend. Most of the time she works in her mother's party planning office as Project Manager/Executive Secretary and all-around technology administrator.

Suki has an advanced education by 2030's standards, but it is not much more advanced that the top 25% of her peers from high school who also earned PhDs. She started college early, like many of her high school classmates.

She has experimented with many things, common for a woman of her time, for most anybody of her age, and she is growing out of that.

John is a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, former defense contractor, current classic car creator and "small L libertarian." He has a comfortable condominium, a nice one-man-operation garage, one true best friend and never seems to meet a stranger.

He is a bit of a solitary man. After his son became a military lawyer and "left the nest", John started tutoring subjects that he had taught his son and had tutored while he was in college, as a productive distraction from his business. It is also something he can do one-on-one, rather than having to deal with large groups.

John prefers women his own age or older and would be thrilled if he finds a woman who just wants to be nice to him.

Atlas Shrugged is now more popular abroad than in the USA and Suki reads it twice per year.

The USA is recovering from the hyperinflation of the early part of the century. The rest of the world is rapidly adopting the free market and the rule of law.

Suki I, the story of how Suki found John and they became an item. This one is mainly about Suki, her mother and friends, who all help Suki land the man of her dreams.

Set in Arlington, Virginia in the early 2030's (May of a year not revealed) with the most interesting gadgets, communication and toys the near future might bring. As John says, "No stupid flying cars in my books! Just realistic cool toys."

Most recreational drugs are legal and smoking in bars is legal in VA too. They are Libertarians living in a county that is slowly catching up to their political tastes. Washington, DC is right across the river and even more of a mess than earlier in the century.

Their friends don't know anybody else who wants a marriage without a marriage license, nor anybody else seeking a truly monogamous relationship, other than Suki and John.

Oh, the fashions! Electrochromic polymer dresses and boots, lovely silks, leather and shoes, shoes, shoes! Boots too. Amazing varieties of gourmet food are plentyful. Lab grown Kobe beef, genetically modified tomatoes, almost anything you can think of today is available in their world. Muscle cars and trucks for the guys to read about, plus the great sex life Suki and John have for everybody to enjoy.

Suki II: Sunshine Returns, Suki's troubled past comes back to haunt them both. It begins where Suki I ended, in June of the same year, and ends in December, with a delay in John's birthday because of a crisis. Suki thinks her past may destroy the relationship! Bonus, Samantha meets John's son Tag! Much more about Tag and Samantha is told and more of Suki's history is revealed. Sunshine drugs and attacks Suki, but John saves her in a unique way.

Ever wonder what a shotgun lesbian wedding would be like in a future where marriage and divorce can be filed electronically? A peek into that world is revealed in Suki II. Autonomous cargo planes, greatly expanded communications networks, automated home cleaning, a beautiful limo and more exquisite leather fashions for private as well as public wear.

Government healthcare? Not for them. They have private-practice doctors and all of their records are on pulp, rather than on K-Net.

Suki III: Never Let Us End, an ex-girlfriend of John's, Nancy, creates terrible problems for the couple and John is hospitalized for a week.

It begins in December, during John's birthday party, and ends in January, picking up where Suki II ended.

Nancy forces Suki to hypnotize John and makes Suki do awful things under the influence of a powerful mediction. Suki has to defend John from three attackers! Suki, her mother, Jung, along with their doctors bring John back to health, in a private hospital. Suki becomes closer friends with John's best friend, Jackie, and they prepare for their first vacation in years.

The 1960 Polara custom limo plays a starring role. More of John's past is revealed. More interesting gadgets too, for inside and outside the bedroom. One of my favorite parts, Suki has a full length baby seal fur coat (lab grown clone fur).

Suki IV: Finally a Vacation (War With Iran), the couple finally gets a vacation and chooses a safe place, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. It begins where Suki III ends, in January and continues through Valentine's Day. Just when they think they can relax, the government needs them to help as consultants to defeat Iran in the surprise attack lead by Israel. Tag is already in Iran as a liaison to the Israeli Defense Forces.

Suki buys her first shotgun and John teaches her how to shoot Trap and Skeet.

The couple's minds are not the only thing they are interested in. John and Suki are both trained to obey without question or hesitation. Suki is trained to kill with a unique weapon!

Li'l ol' me wrote a story following on Sarah's story, Suki: Settling the Score. After being rescued, John and Suki are finally released from their month-long US government debriefing, but they still have problems. Severe behavior problems, continuing to act as they were trained by Mike and Honey, their kidnappers in Sarah's story. They need help, but Suki is slow to agree to it until John exercises his full dominance over her, after they have both done things that would normally end their relationship.

The baby seal fur coat reappears in a totally different setting than one would expect. Plus some interesting disguise techniques, like contacts with view screens and data, natural skin feel masks, body makeup and instantaneous hair changing products.

Also, John and Suki finally agree to get pets, a black kitten and a grey kitten, one for each home: Dark Helmet and Smoke.

FAA WANTS 747-8 HACK PROOFED

Boeing's latest 747, the 747-8, has new computer systems that "may allow the exploitation of network security vulnerabilities resulting in intentional or unintentional destruction, disruption, degradation, or exploitation" of critical systems, according to the FAA. In short, the FAA is making sure that Boeing addresses the possibility that the jets, which can be configured to hold 400 passengers, could be hacked.

NASA WORKING ON 'FLYING SUIT'

It looks like a collaboration between Yves Rossy and the Martin Jetpack, with a little Buzz Lightyear thrown in, but NASA says its Puffin "personal flying suit" could someday whisk its occupant from a standing start to 30,000 feet on 60 horsepower of battery power. The device uses two rotors to vertically lift and then propel the occupant at speeds up to 120 knots. The concept was unveiled at a meeting of the American Helicopter Society Jan. 20 by Mark D. Moore, an aerospace engineer at NASA's Langley Research Center. Before you start making room in the garage, however, there's a serious side to the whimsical device that will keep it in military hands, at least for now.

The Great Haggis vs. Sushi Debate (Haggis to be decriminalized in USA)

Many proud Scotsman celebrate the birthday of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns—January 25, as it happens—with dish of haggis. This is because Burns created the world's foremost, and perhaps only, instance compelling pro-haggis verse. But true haggis imports from Scotland have been illegal in the United States (a tragedy Ilamented in these pages many Burns Nights ago), for the last 21 years thanks to ungrounded fears about mad cow disease transmission.

But this week the World Organization for Animal Health ruled sheep's lungs do not convey a variant of the disease, and the U.S. is expected to reopen the haggis floodgates shortly. (Don't think too hard about the phrase "haggis floodgates.")

NASA's Next Space Suit

If NASA returns to the moon in 2020 as planned, astronauts will step out in a brand-new space suit. It will give them new mobility and flexibility on the lunar surface while still protecting them from its harsh environment. The suit will also be able to sustain life for up to 150 hours and will even be equipped with a computer that links directly back to Earth.

The new design will also let astronauts work outside of the International Space Station (ISS) and will be suitable for trips to Mars, as outlined in NASA's program for exploration, called Constellation. "The current suits just cannot do everything we need them to do," saysTerry Hill, the Constellation space suit engineering project manager at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "We have a completely new design, something that has never been done before."

An interesting read (linked in the article) is the work Air Force Captain Kittinger did over 50 years ago in high altitude ballooning and free-fall. It also answers a lot of the questions asked in comments. He got up to 614 MPH in his experiments.

Straight out of Conspiracy Theory (thank you for taking me Daddy!), Chavez spokesperson accuses Obama of zapping Haiti with the secret Earthquake Weapon! Was the Space Shuttle orbiting then?

Citing an alleged report from Russia's Northern Fleet, the Venezuelan strongman's state mouthpiece ViVe TV shot out a press release saying the 7.0 magnitude Haiti quake was caused by a U.S. test of an experimental shockwave system that can also create "weather anomalies to cause floods, droughts and hurricanes."

The station's Web site added that the U.S. government's HAARP program, an atmospheric research facility in Alaska (and frequent subject of conspiracy theories), was also to blame for a Jan. 9 quake in Eureka, Calif., and may have been behind the 7.8-magnitude quake in China that killed nearly 90,000 people in 2008.

FBI got 2,000 phone records with fake terrorism emergencies

The Federal Bureau of Investigation used false terrorism emergencies to illegally collect more than 2,000 phone records between 2002 and 2006. A series of e-mails and memos obtained by The Washington Post details how FBI officials violated their own procedures and strained their communication analysis unit with non-urgent requests. In many instances, approval was granted after records had been collected to justify the FBIâ(TM)s actions.
Later this month, the Justice Department is expected to issue a report that will find the FBI violated regulations many times with its terrorism-related phone record requests. FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III did not now about the problems until late 2006 or early 2007 when they were brought to light by an inspector general investigation, reports the Associated Press.
The memos do not reveal whose phone records were collected by the FBI, but Bureau officials say that nearly all instances were related to terrorism cases. They added that agents were working under the stress of trying to stop potential terror attacks and did not intentionally violate the law.

Another step towards gogs

This sounds promising:

Aliph has just unveiled the Jawbone Icon, which promises to be the company's most sophisticated Bluetooth headset yet. We've had a chance to really put the headset through its paces for the past week, and we have to say it absolutely delivers. Not only does it look and sound great, it offers more flexibility than any other Bluetooth headset due to an industry-first software platform.

It's called MyTalk, and the Jawbone Icon has what Aliph says is an operating system on a chip. This lets Aliph do some really interesting things with this headset. For example, when you pair the Jawbone Icon with the Apple iPhone, you'll see a visual battery meter of the Icon right next to the iPhone's own battery meter on the upper right corner. This way you can easily check on the Jawbone Icon's battery status. While this may strike some people as a small thing, we think it's pretty cool.

The big news with MyTalk, however, is that you can plug the Jawbone Icon into your computer and customize it with a variety of Audio and Dial "apps." Simply log on to the mytalk.jawbone.com Web site (which will be live shortly), plug in the headset via a USB cable, and the Website will automatically detect it. You can then customize it with a variety of Audio apps, which are essentially voice profiles of different personalities.

There are six different voice personalities--The Ace, the Hero, the Thinker, the Bombshell, the Rogue, and the Catch--plus a default that comes with the headset. The voices range from a deep male baritone to that of a sultry female. You can also have it in French, German, or Spanish. The different voice profiles are used for spoken alerts on the headset that announce things like incoming caller ID and the headset's battery status.

As for the Dial apps, they are essentially speed dial numbers you can map to the Talk button on the headset. Some of the Dial apps include Voice Dial; Directory Assistance; 1800Free411; Jott (a service that lets you dictate notes, reminders, and more); and Dial2Do; which is similar to Jott. Though calling these personalization options "apps" is a bit of a stretch, we really have to commend Aliph on the intuitive interface of the MyTalk Web site. Perhaps the best thing about the MyTalk software platform is that Aliph can easily send out firmware updates this way.

If they had clear LED displays, these things would be really close to what is described as gogs in the Suki Series.

Avatar puzzle: Feathers

After seeing Avatar once it took me a few days to find a real puzzle.

I didn't notice any creatures on Pandora that had feathers. Maybe I missed it, but I poked around the internet a bit and did not find any Pandoran creatures with feathers.

So, where do the Na'vi get the feather fletching for their arrows and feather decorations for their clothes?

I looked in the Pandorapedia and on The Google too. No luck yet.

Thoughts on Neytiri, in Avatar

I really did not want to put this in my Avatar review, so I will park it over here, since it is more book stuff than movie stuff. This did not start as being such a detailed comparison between Neytiri from the movie Avatar and Suki, the character in the books I helped with. The books were my first project like that and I really got into it. I just saw Avatar yesterday and it made a big impression on me. Feel good impressions on different levels. I guess this is just personal observations I am sharing with anybody who wants to read them.

Neytiri is the Princess who falls in love with Jake, and he with her, in Avatar. For some reason I was thinking the character Suki, that I helped develop, was more similar to her than an objective look reveals. I am certainly not trying to compare John's or my work to James Cameron's work either! After thinking about it, some things were comforting that we seemed to get so many things right in our stories. Comforting in the sense that the things we worked on had the right elements for a complete story. John pointed out that the similarities were just the basic elements required for a romance for modern audiences.

I guess I was thrown by Neytiri being an expert archer, like Suki. Once my science brain came back on and my aw-how-romantic brain took a rest I was all "duh, she lives in the FOREST! She better be good with a bow and a knife too!" Suki is just a great archer as a hobby, but her great marksmanship comes in handy late. So, they are both archers by accident. Both characters have mastered their environments, but they are completely different environments. Suki is a city girl, for sure and Neytiri is all country. But I can't help but think that either character could be dropped into the environment of the other and the reader/viewer would believe them mastering their new surroundings.

They both have a serious side that can be lethal and a sweet side, like most anybody. But they are revealed in the opposite order.

Part of Neytiri's status in her world is from birth. She is the Chief's daughter and daughter to the spiritual leader of the tribe/nation too. Suki is a self-made woman. Her mother was not successful in business until Suki was out of the nest and in college under scholarships, fellowships, stipends and eventually her own Intellectual Property portfolio with licensing deals for her ideas. It wasn't because of her mother's social status, nor that of her late father.

A small thing they appear to share, even after examination, is they are both loners of sorts. It is more obvious with Neytiri, who is part of a tribal culture but she seems to be the only one in the tribe who goes off by herself. Everybody else in the tribe does things as a group. That is very appealing to a women like me and something that drew me to both characters as I got to know them. The independent woman.

The other huge thing was how Neytiri protects Jake, saves his life several times, protects him with her body when he is helpless or unconscious. Suki does similar for John, especially in Suki III: Never Let Us End, but the big difference is Neytiri was going to kill Jake when she first saw him. Suki wanted to get to know John and wanted to keep him as soon as she met him. The quality of the female character protecting her guy is a pretty powerful thing in romances. Have seen it often in movies and I am sure it is in the books my friends read. It works like magic on me and it seems to impress the guys too and it is common in reality, when a girl really likes her guy.

Both characters do teach their men a thing or two. Don't we always? Neytiri has to teach Jake everything. Suki has an easier time with John. John (the book character) is impressive to Suki right away and only builds on that. Suki's problem is getting John to notice her romantically. Neytiri has the opposite problem. Jake does not impress her in the slightest but he is interested in her right away. Only a sign from God (Eywa) stops her from killing his avatar as an intruder, another time when she is out by herself. She saves him from the wild beasts right after that, but only out of her spiritual belief, not out of like or affection. LATER, she starts protecting him when he becomes her responsibility and even later, when he is her guy, she protects him out of love. Suki is ready to save John, with lethal force if needed, on their second date, while he is standing up for her against a rude young man in a restaurant.

Like I said at the beginning, these are my thoughts 24 hours after seeing one of the greatest movies I have ever seen and Neytiri is one of the greatest characters ever. None of us who worked on the books knew anything about Avatar before the Suki series was published either. The paperback with all four books was available in November, 2009 and Suki I was published on Amazon Kindle in May, 2009.

SEOUL, Korea (AVING) -- LG Display has developed the world's largest flexible electronic-paper screen measuring 25cm by 40cm, which translates into a 19-inch screen size.

With 0.3mm thickness and 130g weight, it utilizes a metal foil instead of a traditional glass to make itself both flexible and durable. Boasting a high-contrast ratio, it only requires power when the screen is refreshed so the e-paper device features a long battery life.

According to the company, they plan to begin mass production of an 11.5-inch flexible electronic paper screen in the first half of this year via Skiff.

This is so DAMN STUPID! Trust me, neither John, nor Sarah, nor I write about a world this stupid in the future! (right you two?)

This makes as much sense as taking books away from sighted students because the blind students have braille, speech to text (INCLUDED IN THE KINDLE!) and who knows what else.

Three U.S. universities will stop promoting the use of Amazon.com's Kindle DX e-book reader in classrooms after complaints that the device doesn't give blind students equal access to information.

Settlements with Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Pace University in New York City and Reed College in Portland, Oregon, were announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Justice. The National Federation of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind had complained that use of the Kindle devices discriminates against students with vision problems.

The complaints about the Kindle were based on the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability.

The three universities were among six schools participating in an Amazon.com pilot program testing the use of the Kindle DX in classrooms. On Monday, a fourth participating school, Arizona State University, also reached a settlement with the DOJ and the two organizations representing the blind.

Three other schools announced in late 2009 they will not deploy Kindle in classrooms.

The Kindle DX has the capability to convert text to synthesized speech, but the device does not include text-to-speech functionality for its menu and navigational controls, the DOJ said in a press release. Some reviewers and users of the device's text-to-speech software have also said the speech is difficult to listen to and the conversion can be inaccurate.

On second though, in the 2030s future world of Suki and John, this might be the case in DC and other similar places, but NOT in Virginia!

. . . Appearing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Chief Executive Alan Mulally and other Ford executives also said it has partnerships with map supplier Mapquest, Internet radio provider Pandora, micro-blogging service Twitter and audio news service Stitcher.

Ford executives didn't detail the nature of their talks withGoogle, which recently unveiled its own branded smartphone. But they suggested the discussions involved designing products based on Google'sAndroid mobile operating system that would be compatible with Ford's on-board entertainment-and-communications platform, known as Sync.

"Many of you here inspired us to move at Silicon Valley speeds," Mulally said. "It is challenging. It is fun." . . .

In the Suki books, the cars John builds (never Fords) have advanced navigation and 3D virtual dashboards, monitors, etc.

More technology coming true that John wrote about for the future. In this case it was from Suki III: Never Let Us End when Suki was drugged by Nancy into making a movie in her own dining room. It was shot with high end 3D holographic equipment that was very small, which is probably still a few years off.

University of Washington astronomers this week said that the first rocky planet discoveredoutside our solar system is on fire, almost literally.

The scientists say if the planet, known as CoRoT-7b, has an orbit that is not almost perfectly circular, then the planet might be undergoing fierce volcanic eruptions. It could be even more volcanically active than Jupiter's moon Io, which has more than 400 volcanoes and is the most geologically active object in our solar system, the researchers said in a release.

Double A-Bomb Survivor Dies

TSUTOMU Yamaguchi, a rare survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, has died at the age of 93.

Yamaguchi's family notified Nagasaki City officials, who only 10 months ago recognised his status as Eniijuu hibakusha (double bomb sufferer), that he died on Monday from cancer.

Those two hellish days, and the later death from cancer of his son, exposed to the Nagasaki radiation at six months, made Yamaguchi into a passionate campaigner against nuclear weapons.

"My double radiation exposure is now an official government record," he said last March, when his city administration finally acknowledged he had been injured by both American atomic bombs.

"It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die."

ESPN 3D to show soccer, football, more

Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa vs. Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.

"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today.

3D monitors are key in some of John's books too. Bartender "Big D" also works at a Best Buy in the future and hooked John up with 3D monitors for a limo he was building in Suki III: Never Let Us End and they are mentioned again in Suki IV: Finally A Vacation. Come to think of it, they are the norm in the future, I just don't remember specifics of where else they were brought up.
