Personal Communication Devices in the Future: Gogs

We have several posts on the other blog about Gogs, or personal digital audio-visual devices. The term gog is short for goggles. I have Suki wearing hers on the cover of Suki III. They are glasses with imagery projected onto them. Never decided on the specific display technology, i.e., I didn't go all Neil Stephenson (I am a big fan of his) in describing how the things work. I stuck with describing use.

Now that I have idle time, I am thinking "transparent" LCD technology, rather than a laser painting images on the eye like in Snow Crash. The way I am thinking allows for a 3D effect too.

I lucked out finding The Sixth Sense project when I was trying to describe manual data input. They have the basics figured out and helped me be more descriptive. The user "types" on a virtual keyboard in the air, selects images, etc. Like a touch screen, except they are actually touching space in their view, behind the actual screen.

This also allows for some additional security. Nobody but the user would know what keyboard layout the user is using, making it difficult to "snag" typed pass codes from finger movements. It would not be impossible, just more difficult than today.

All modern (future) security features are incorperated in the gogs that the characters use. Suki even does biometric authentication on hers in several passages, touching the side of her gogs with her "signing finger" and then typing her code in the air.

I don't think I got into it in detail, but I was imagening a combination of iris and other biometric security being used so that an owner of a set of gogs could "lock" them and they automatically become functional when the owner, or their designee, dons them and they will not function on a non-authorized user. In Suki II: Sunshine Returns, Suki has hers set so that she is the only one who can send messages but others can read her messages. That's why Sunshine can check Suki's messages but she has to have Suki send. Sunshine has control over Suki through a heavy drugging. I think John will insist on her changing this when I edit "The Collection."

I thought about Sunshine making Suki give her write access, but then thought that better message security in the future would automatically reveal who sent the message "for" someone. I also wanted to avoid the possibility of a character miswording something, so I figured out a way for Suki to be forced into sending the messages reliably.

Several posts about them on SukiProject.Blogspot.com.

Shotgun Tech in Suki IV

First things first.  I chose Suki's shotgun in Suki IV to be a Benelli because I like the brand.  Nothing more, nothing less.  I also chose the place of purchase to be a Mega Wal*Mart on an Air Force base because I wish the future to be more efficient in that manner.  I doubt that part will happen in the next 25 years.

With what I wrote in the fondation of the series, in Suki I and on the web page, set the foundation of machine tools being inexpensive and relatively easy to use.  So, when the couple goes to Sporting Goods in the Mega Wal*Mart, the staff only has to have barrel stock and a couple of machines to fabricate and temper any barrel a customer wants on their shotgun, rifle or pistol.

I was telling a highly rated skeet shooter I know about some of the features and he said most of that is available now, like barrel extentions and video, but I just have it refined a bit more in the future.  Neither of us knew of any commercially available guns that had all of this stuff on them right from the store.

As far as the recording and telemetry in the gun, I did not want to get too wordy (I got that way anyway) with how the shot pellets were individually RF taged so the gun could record the entire trajectory of each pellet through a shot.  I should have specified in the story that they purchase RF tagged shot.  Will probably do that in "The Collection" where I will stick all four books together as one.  That is how John can show (brag to) his relatives that Suki was hitting every clay target in the center of her pattern near the end of Suki IV.  Also, "solid state" memory is small and very dense, so an entire day, or several, can be recorded on a tiny chip in the gun.

The gun has full spectrim video through the sight line of the shooter and at the muzzle, so the shooter can review and adjust their aiming habits to match where the muzzle is "looking."

Of course, I want the laws to be different in the future, so I just made up what I like.  No extra charge for having a short barrel, buying guns more than one State away is no problem either.  If Suki were buying a pistol, the suppressor would be just another item too.  Actually, I forgot to add that in Suki III, so something else for The Collection, if I remember it.

ePaper of the future by Katherine Mangu-Ward

K M-W has a great take on something several writers, including John, have included in their future fiction: Electronic Paper.

Wiki Magazines on the Way, Neal Stephenson Is Awesome.

News for the Vickies
Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age offers a portrait of an exclusive community of neo-Victorians living within a dizzying nanotech future. One of the charming quirks of the upper echelons: Reading the same news as other people in their social group—sometimes even on paper:
 . . .

Looks like Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is bringing us one step closer to the the future of nostalgia for the past, with a hybrid option

Read the rest at the link above.

John's take on products like this was a little more far-reaching.  He has electronic paper being used for almost everything, so much so that if you want something on traditional paper you need to request "pulp".  Suki gets a smoking, open flame and prostitution ticket in DC on ePaper, that is electronically signed by everybody concerned, including the appellate judge, and the officer remotely scans her "stimulus card" (government issued credit card) for payment.  John's vehicle invoices and registration are ePaper, with biometric authentication.

In Suki II (Google browse link below), Suki's wedding license and certificate with Sunshine are done on a variant, a notary's log not much thicker than paper.  Most all of these items are connected through The Mesh to K-Net.

When Suki changes her name, in Suki IV (browse on Google, below), every document she ever created on the networks is updated with her new name.  Pretty cool stuff.

Expect a comment from John below (or I can add it here if he e-mails it to me).  We discussed Diamond Age during  the drafts of Suki I and I was surprised to discover John only read a little of it and didn't like it.  He is heavy into Snow Crash.  I liked both but retained more from SC than DA.

First Post!

Let's get this show on the road.  John tasked me with getting a blog up where we could talk about tech stuff from the book series.  Things like Gogs, ePaper, cool stuff that he made up for the future (and I helped with a lil ;).

The social stuff, porn, politics, funnies, stalker watch, all that is staying over at The Suki Project blog.

I am the Queen of this space, all final edits are mine.  John has global editing power over at the other one.
